Many parents find themselves wondering, “When should my child first see a dentist?” It’s a common question, and an important one when it comes to setting the foundation for lifelong oral health.

Here at SoCal Pediatric Dentistry, we believe healthy smiles and lasting habits begin early. I’m Dr. Bri (Dr. Brianne Hama), and we love being that reassuring resource for new and growing families. Our pediatric dental care is designed to support children from the very beginning, in an environment where they can feel comfortable, confident, and maybe even have a little fun.

So, let’s talk about the big question we get all the time: When should your child come in for their very first visit? The answer may be earlier than many parents expect.

The First-Birthday Rule: Earlier Than You Might Think

The timing for a child’s first dental visit often comes earlier than many parents expect. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their first dental visit within six months of the eruption of their first tooth, and no later than their first birthday. That’s right, by the time they’re blowing out that first candle, they should have already established their dental home.

We know that it may feel early. Many parents assume they can wait until their child has more teeth or is old enough to sit still in the chair. However, waiting can actually harm them.

Tooth decay remains the most common chronic disease in children. Identifying risk factors early, before problems begin, can make a significant difference for your child’s oral health and help prevent more complex treatment down the road. Not just for your child’s health, but for your wallet, too.

Why Coming In Early Sets Kids Up for Success

The first visit isn’t meant to be a big or intimidating experience. Think of it more as a meet-and-greet… with a little parental guidance along the way. During the visit, we take a look at how your child’s teeth are coming in, brush and floss, talk with you about brushing routines and diet, and discuss what to expect as more teeth begin to appear. Just as importantly, we want to make sure your child leaves feeling comfortable with the whole experience.

Building that positive association early is something we’re very intentional about.

And if your child cries a little, that’s completely okay. It’s very common for infants and toddlers, especially when they’re not used to someone looking inside their mouths. My goal is simply to help the experience become familiar over time, so that each visit feels easier and more comfortable as your child grows.

During an infant oral health exam, there are several things we’ll typically review with you, including:

  • How teeth are erupting: We check how your child’s teeth are coming in and look for any early developmental or alignment concerns.
  • Brushing and cleaning techniques: We walk you through how to properly clean your child’s teeth and gums as they grow.
  • Dietary habits: We discuss what to encourage, what to limit, and how certain foods and drinks can affect developing enamel.
  • Pacifier, sucking habits, and bottle use: We discuss when and how to start transitioning away from these habits.
  • Fluoride and cavity protection: We explain the role fluoride plays in strengthening enamel and helping protect teeth from decay. We’ll also discuss how it may fit into your child’s preventive care, so you can decide what feels right for your family.

Our goal is to give you the guidance and confidence you need so that dental care becomes a natural part of a child’s routine, not something to worry about or avoid.

What If You’ve Already Missed That Window?

No guilt here! Many families come to us after their first birthday, and we’re always glad they do. Whether your child is two, five, or even heading into middle school, it’s never too late to establish a dental home and get things on the right track.

Starting dental visits at any age allows us to check on your child’s oral health, answer questions, and help build healthy habits moving forward.

Every Child Is Welcome at SoCal Pediatric Dentistry

At SoCal Pediatric Dentistry, we care for children from infancy through adolescence, and often through their teenage years. Our number one priority is meeting every child exactly where they are.

If your child feels a little anxious about the dentist, that’s completely okay. One of the things we’re most passionate about is working with kids in a way that feels calm, supportive, and safe; Especially for those who may have had a more challenging dental experience in the past or who have special healthcare needs that require extra patience and care.

Every child deserves to feel comfortable in the dental chair, and we take that seriously.
