A pediatric dental recare appointment is your child’s most important preventive visit, and a professional dental cleaning is a core part of every recare appointment. Together, they form the foundation of lifelong oral health, removing harmful buildup, monitoring healthy development, and giving our team the opportunity to catch small concerns before they grow. For children, keeping up with recare is especially important, since baby teeth play a critical role in chewing, speech, and holding space for permanent teeth.
Â
At SoCal Pediatric Dentistry in Torrance, our pediatric dental services are built around making children feel safe and comfortable from the moment they walk in. Dr. Bri, a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, leads every visit with a patient, thoughtful approach that puts both kids and parents at ease.
Why Dental Cleanings Matter for Kids
Baby teeth do more than many parents realize. They support proper chewing, aid in speech development, and hold space in the jaw for incoming permanent teeth. When decay is left untreated, it doesn’t stay contained to a single tooth. Research from the National Institutes of Health shows that bacteria responsible for early childhood tooth decay can persist in the mouth and affect newly emerging adult teeth. That’s why preventive care matters at every age.
Â
Consistent dental cleanings and exams also give Dr. Bri a regular window into your child’s development. Tooth alignment, bite patterns, and gum health all shift as children grow, and routine visits allow us to monitor these changes and address any concerns early.
What Happens During a Recare Appointment?
Our recare appointments are thorough, gentle, and tailored to your child’s comfort level. Here’s what to expect at a typical visit:
Â
- Professional cleaning: Careful removal of plaque and tartar buildup, including areas that are difficult to reach at home
- Polishing: A gentle polish that leaves teeth feeling clean and smooth
- Fluoride treatment: A protective fluoride application to strengthen enamel and reduce cavity risk
- Dental exam: A check for signs of decay, developmental concerns, and anything else worth monitoring
- Digital X-rays (as needed): Low-radiation digital imaging used when clinically appropriate
Â
Every child who completes their cleaning earns a prize at the front desk. It’s a small tradition, but one kids genuinely look forward to.

How Often Should My Child Have a Recare Appointment?
Most children do well with recare appointments every six months, per the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's recommended dental periodicity schedule. That schedule allows enough time to track developmental changes while staying ahead of potential concerns. However, some children may benefit from more frequent visits. Kids who are at higher risk for cavities due to diet, brushing habits, oral appliances (i.e. braces), or oral chemistry may be recommended to come in every three to four months. During your visit, we'll talk through what frequency makes the most sense for your child. There's no standard answer that works for every family, and we'd rather have a real conversation with you than hand you a generic schedule. If you're unsure whether your child is due for a visit, our first-visit page is a helpful resource.
Making Dental Visits a Positive Experience
One of our primary focuses at SoCal Pediatric Dentistry is behavioral management, helping children feel genuinely comfortable with dental care rather than simply getting through the appointment.
Â
For kids who need extra support, we offer nitrous oxide as a safe, effective option to ease anxiety without sedation. We explain every step before we do it, work at each child’s pace, and aim to send kids home feeling proud. Those early positive associations with dental care tend to last.
Â
We also encourage parents to ask questions at every visit, whether about brushing technique, diet, or whether their child might benefit from dental sealants. The more informed you are, the better equipped you’ll be to support your child’s oral health at home.
