A knocked-out tooth is one of those moments that can send any parent’s heart racing. One second, your child is playing, and the next, there’s a tooth on the ground and tears in the air. Whether it happened on the playground, during a sport, or from a simple tumble at home, knowing what to do in those first few minutes can make a real difference, especially when a permanent tooth is involved. The good news? With the right steps taken quickly, saving the tooth is absolutely possible.

At SoCal Pediatric Dentistry, we want every family in the South Bay to feel prepared for an emergency before it happens. Our team is here to guide you through stressful situations with warmth, expertise, and a calm hand. If your child has experienced a dental trauma, the steps you take in the first 30 minutes can truly be the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Our emergency pediatric care services are designed to get your little one seen quickly and treated with the gentle, specialized care they deserve.

Baby Tooth vs. Permanent Tooth: It Changes Everything

The first thing to figure out is whether the tooth that came out is a baby tooth or a permanent one. This matters a lot when deciding what to do next.

If it’s a baby tooth, do not try to put it back in the socket. Reimplanting a primary tooth can actually interfere with the development of the permanent tooth underneath it. Instead, gently rinse your child’s mouth with warm water, apply a clean piece of gauze to control any bleeding, and contact our office so we can schedule to evaluate the area and ensure no damage was done to the underlying permanent tooth.

When It’s a Permanent Tooth

A knocked-out permanent tooth is a true dental emergency. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, permanent teeth have the best chance of being saved when placed back in the socket within 15 minutes, though acting within an hour still offers a real chance of success. Time is everything, so stay calm and move fast.

Step-by-Step: What to Do Right Now

Stay calm, take a breath, and follow these steps carefully. What you do in the next few minutes matters enormously.

Here is what to do when your child knocks out a permanent tooth:

  • Find the tooth immediately and pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface), never the root. Touching the root can damage the delicate cells needed for successful reimplantation.
  • Rinse it gently with clean water only. Do not scrub it, use soap, or wrap it in a tissue or cloth.
  • Try to place it back in the socket if your child is old enough and calm enough to cooperate. Hold it in position by having your child gently bite down on a piece of gauze.
  • If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a cup of milk, your child’s saliva, or a saline solution. Do not store it in tap water.
  • Call our office immediately.

Every second counts, and following these steps gives the tooth its best possible shot at survival.

What If There Are Other Signs of Injury?

It’s important to take a moment and assess your child beyond just the tooth. If the impact was significant enough to knock out a tooth, it’s worth watching closely for signs of a more serious injury. If your child loses consciousness, vomits, or seems dizzy after the incident, go directly to the emergency room. A possible head injury always takes priority over saving a tooth.

Once your child is safe and stable, we can focus on the tooth itself. Dr. Bri will take digital X-rays, assess the area, and map out the best path forward, drawing on our full range of pediatric dental services to support your child’s smile and overall oral health.

How to Prevent Knocked-Out Teeth

While we can’t bubble-wrap our kids, there are simple steps that can significantly reduce the risk of dental trauma. Mouthguards are a must during contact sports and high-activity play, and helmets matter for biking, skating, and skateboarding. As always, scheduling a first visit with Dr. Bri early in your child’s life sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy, resilient smiles.
