A fall from a bike, a collision on the soccer field, a sudden toothache that has your child in tears at midnight, dental emergencies rarely wait for a convenient moment. When something goes wrong with your child’s teeth or mouth, the decisions you make in the first few minutes can directly affect the outcome. Having a trusted pediatric dentist to call is not just reassuring; it is essential.

At SoCal Pediatric Dentistry in Torrance, Dr. Brianne Hama and her team are prepared to help your family navigate urgent dental situations with calm, experienced care. As a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Bri understands the unique nature of children’s dental development and how quickly certain emergencies must be addressed. Our pediatric dental services are built around the needs of children from infancy through adolescence, and that commitment extends to emergency situations as well.

What Counts as a Pediatric Dental Emergency?

Not every dental concern requires an urgent same-day visit, but some situations absolutely do. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry identifies dental emergencies as including facial swelling, infections, uncontrolled bleeding, pain, and oral-facial trauma, and recognizes that emergency availability is a fundamental part of quality pediatric dental care. When in doubt, call our office. We would rather hear from you and determine together that it can wait than have you delay care when time is a factor.

The following situations should always be treated as urgent and addressed as soon as possible:

Knocked-out tooth

Whether it is a baby tooth or a permanent tooth, the steps you take immediately matter. For a permanent tooth, time is critical for the best chance of saving it.

Chipped or fractured tooth

Depending on the severity, a chipped tooth may expose the nerve and require prompt attention.

Dental infection or facial swelling

Swelling of the face or jaw can signal a serious infection that needs immediate evaluation.

Severe toothache

Persistent pain that disrupts sleep or eating warrants a same-day call to our office.

Severe toothache

Persistent pain that disrupts sleep or eating warrants a same-day call to our office.

Soft tissue injury

Cuts or lacerations to the tongue, lip, or cheek should be assessed, especially if bleeding is difficult to control.

If your child has experienced a head injury alongside a dental trauma, such as loss of consciousness, vomiting, or dizziness, go directly to the emergency room. Brain injury always takes priority over dental concerns.

What to Do While You Wait

Knowing what to do in different emergency situations can ensure your child has the best chance at an ideal outcome.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, locate it immediately and hold it by the crown, not the root. If the root is dirty, rinse it gently with water and do not scrub. If possible, carefully reposition the tooth in the socket and hold it in place, or place it in a small glass of milk or saliva to keep it moist. Call our office right away, as tooth survival is highly time-sensitive and outcomes are significantly better when the tooth is replanted quickly. For a knocked-out baby tooth, do not attempt to replant it. Apply gentle pressure to the socket and contact us to schedule an evaluation.

Toothache or Swelling

Gently clean the area and floss to remove any trapped food or debris. Rinse with warm salt water. If your child is in pain, Children’s Tylenol or Motrin may be given as directed on the label. Do not place any topical medications directly on the gum tissue. Contact our office so we can assess what is happening and determine the appropriate next step.

Why a Pediatric Dentist Matters in an Emergency

Not all dental providers are equally equipped to manage emergencies in children. Children’s teeth, gum tissue, and developing bone respond differently than adults’, and pediatric training specifically addresses these differences. Dr. Bri completed her residency at New York University College of Dentistry with focused training in behavioral management and care for children with special health care needs, including urgent and complex treatment scenarios. That experience matters when a frightened child needs quick, compassionate care delivered by someone who knows exactly how to help.

Families who have established care with us also benefit from after-hours accessibility. If an urgent situation arises outside of regular office hours, you can call our office for guidance. We believe that being a dental home means being available for your family when it matters most.
