Getting your child to the dentist can feel like a challenge when they struggle with fear or anxiety around dental care. Some kids freeze at the sound of the drill. Others have complex treatment needs, are very young, or have special health care needs that make it difficult to complete care while awake. When these situations arise, it does not mean treatment is impossible. It simply means your child may benefit from a little extra support.
Â
At SoCal Pediatric Dentistry in Torrance, Dr. Brianne Hama, a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, takes behavior management seriously. Her team offers a range of sedation options designed to help children receive the dental care they need in a safe, calm, and comfortable environment. Whether your child needs a gentle nudge with nitrous oxide or requires more advanced support, our pediatric dental services are tailored to meet each patient where they are.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for Children?
Safety is always the first consideration when sedation is discussed for any child. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s guidelines on behavior guidance for pediatric dental patients describe sedation as one part of a comprehensive behavior management continuum that also includes communication techniques, positive reinforcement, and non-pharmacological strategies. Sedation is recommended only when the benefits of completing treatment outweigh the risks of providing care while a child is fully awake.
Â
At SoCal Pediatric Dentistry, sedation is never a first resort. Dr. Bri and her team first work to build trust with your child using a variety of calming approaches. If sedation is recommended, it is because completing treatment safely requires it. Every plan is personalized, every parent is informed, and every step prioritizes your child’s wellbeing above all else.

Sedation Options at SoCal Pediatric Dentistry
There are different options for sedation at our dental office. These include the following:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is the mildest form of sedation available and is one of the most widely used options in pediatric dentistry. It is inhaled through a small mask that fits over the nose and takes effect quickly, helping children feel relaxed and at ease during treatment. It is safe, easily adjustable, and fully cleared from the body before your child leaves the office. Dr. Bri recommends that your child eat only something light in the two hours prior to the appointment. This option works well for children with mild to moderate anxiety who need a little reassurance to get through their visit comfortably.
General Anesthesia with IV Sedation
For very young children, children with extensive treatment needs, or children with special needs for whom other behavior management approaches have not been effective, general anesthesia with IV sedation may be the safest and most appropriate option. SoCal Pediatric Dentistry partners with a board-certified anesthesiologist to provide this level of care directly in our office. If general anesthesia is recommended, it is because the risks of treating your child while awake outweigh the risks of sedation. Our goal is always to treat your child in the most effective, most compassionate way possible.
Why Choose SoCal Pediatric Dentistry for Sedation?
Not every dental office offers the full range of sedation options your child might need, and not every dentist has the training to use them safely. Dr. Bri completed her residency and pediatric specialty training at New York University College of Dentistry, where she developed strong skills in behavioral management and care for children with special health care needs. Her experience spans pediatric practices in Florida, Texas, and California, and her board certification through the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry reflects her commitment to maintaining the highest standard of care.
